Mercury launch the new V10 technology giving Nordkapp an increased number of engine alternatives.

During the winter 2023, Mercury launched their completely new V10 engines to the market and further increased their engine range. The new engines are naturally aspirated, without any turbo or compressor aid. The engine is described to produce very low noise levels and to give an improved acceleration, both as 350hp and 400hp. In this article we are taking a closer look at the engines, their technology and potential benefits. We also had a brief chat with head of development for Nordkapp at Frydenbø Marine, Ronny Antonsen, to find out how these new engines can benefit the Nordkapp model range.

The V10 technology - the first of its kind

Mercury has designed their new V10 engines completely from scratch and developed an engine block of an impressive 5,7 liters. The three versions which base their existence on this engine block will be the 350hp, the 400hp and the 400hp R. They share the same platform, as well as being equipped with the Verado technology. The Verado technology provides, with its AMS (advanced mid section) system, lower noise levels and vibration, while the power from the engine is utilized to its maximum.

Gear ratio, propeller and engine volume gives an engine willing to work.

The new V10 Verado engine has a gear ratio of 2.08:1 against the 1.85:1 of the V8 Verado engine. This ratio is tailored to give the V10 very good acceleration benefits and the engine works effortlessly when the boat is planing. These characteristics can thus reduce the planning limits of the boat, which can be especially beneficial on larger and heavier boats.

The V10 engines are made for providing an even better hp-to-weight ratio as well as providing larger boats a fantastic thrust. While the V8 Verado has around 1,10 hp/kg, the V10 produces around 1,26 hp/kg).

The full throttle RPM on the V10 350 & 400 is 6400 (depending on propeller) while the V10 400R has a maximum full throttle of 6600 RPMs. In comparison the Verado V8 has a full throttle of 6000 RPMs.

Mercury has introduced the DTS (Digital Throttle & Shift) on an increasing number of their engines, and the new V10 is no exception. The DTS provides a smooth gear change and one of the most comfortable rides available. The DTS use electronical signals instead of cables, improving your precision while driving. The DTS also provide the option of driving the Twin Engines using one throttle, making it easier for you as driver. The V10 engines gets the same DTS options as the V8 and V12 engines has, with integrated active trim (no longer a panel on your dashboard) and a start button.

The propeller on the new V10 is from the Revolution X range, characterized by a large diameter which improves the thrust. Part of the secret behind this is the large diameter combined with the gear ratio and torque curve. This makes the new V10 engines very well suited for larger Nordkapp models.

Exciting engine range for the Nordkapp models

Nordkapp will during the season of 2023 be able to deliver the following models with the new V10 engines from Mercury:

«The new V10 engines will be an exciting contribution to the motorization of our Nordkapp models”, says Head of Development for Nordkapp at Frydenbø Marine, Ronny Antonsen.  “The current motor alternatives with the V8 Verado and the V12 Verado gives our boats a unique combination of low noise, lots of torque and a very comfortable driver experience. The new V10 engines gives us new options and enables us to improve the performance of the boats even further while at the same time keeping the high comfort. I am impressed of how silent and yet strong the V8, V10 and V12 range from Mercury is. We measured an incredibly low noise level in our Gran Coupe 905 V12, and that’s with the strongest outboard engine available on the market fitted to the stern. Both the engine technology and the AMS (Advanced Mid Section” from Mercury makes this possible, and we are really looking forward to drive these engines on the Nordkapp models going forward,” says Antonsen.
