The story of Simrad®: Born in war, built for the sea

Over 80 years, Simrad® has become Europe’s most powerful marine electronics manufacturer, with roots tracing back to Norwegian radio engineer Willy Simonsen during World War II. 

Under Gestapo arrest in 1941 during the Nazi occupation of Norway, Simonsen hatched a daring escape plan. He had been caught developing equipment to intercept Nazi radio traffic. A year later, after successfully escaping to England, he began working in the Radio Production Unit of the British War Office.

There, he created a compact shortwave radio receiver called the "Sweetheart." It was distributed to resistance forces worldwide and played a vital role in the Allied victory.

The experience forced him to refine his craft under pressure. When the war ended, he carried that knowledge into a new direction. Instead of conflict, he turned to the sea.

He founded Simrad® in 1946, initially producing ship radios for Norwegian fishermen. By the late 1940s, working with business partner John Mustad, he developed echosounders for the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment.

In 1950, Simrad® launched its first commercial echosounder, the same precision engineering born from wartime necessity, now helping fishermen navigate and work safely at sea.

That foundation led to decades of innovation in fishfinders, sonars, radars, and navigation systems, all built to give you clarity when it matters most.

Your Simrad® NSX chartplotter includes C-MAP® DISCOVER X™ charts, offering highly detailed terrain views. The charts let you zoom quickly without blurring or delays, while custom depth shading and high-resolution bathymetry enable you to identify underwater hazards and navigate confidently.

You’ll also get C-MAP Safety Alerts that warn of potential hazards when setting a route, such as shallow waters or obstacles, based on your boat's dimensions.

HALO® radar gives you the full picture

The optional HALO radar improves your visibility in fog, rain, and darkness with 360-degree sweeps. It identifies both moving and still targets at short, mid, and long range, helping you spot and avoid collisions early.

To keep you and your Nordkapp even safer, Simrad® recently launched AutoTrack™, which automatically detects, tracks, and prioritises targets (such as other boats or obstacles) in real time.
