Quiet comfort aboard the Coupe 830 wheelhouse boat

A short ride, open water, and the kind of silence that clears your head

One of the advantages of my work is the ability to spend time with our wheelhouse boats when the moment calls for it. Whether it's a calm commute aboard the Coupe 780 or taking in the comfort of the Coupe 905, each outing offers something different. This time, it was the Coupe 830—bringing together the best of both.

The Coupe 830 is an easy-to-drive wheelhouse boat that strikes a balance between function and comfort. It's well-suited for those who want a refined weekend boat with the possibility of a year-round boating season. The wheelhouse offers welcome shade during the heat of summer and warmth when the temperature dips—a feature that made all the difference on the evening described below.

It had been a full day at work, and we ended up staying later than planned. Still, the idea of getting out on the water felt too good to pass up. So we made a last-minute decision—just a short sunset ride aboard the Coupe 830. As the sun dropped closer to the horizon, we made our way to the dock—me, Maja, and our photographer, Teodor.

Each time I step aboard the 830, I feel drawn to go further and stay a little longer. But this time, we kept it simple. We set off from our nearby marina in Sarpsborg, just outside of Oslo, and began cruising across the archipelago. Past the sculptures and guest harbour on Singløya, the Svinesund Bridge, and not least, the stunning islands of Hvaler.

When you hit the throttle, the boat responds with a smooth, satisfying bite from idle. At the start, the 350 hp Mercury V10 engine responds with a lively sound profile before settling in with a deep resonance. Its low tone makes longer journeys more comfortable—something you'll appreciate in a pilothouse-style boat—but it makes a difference even for short outings like this one.

We had luck on our side. It was one of those clear summer evenings when the sea is almost completely still. Even so, the breeze can turn cool as the sun begins to set. The protection of the wheelhouse made a difference—sheltering us from the wind while still letting in the open air through the sunroof.

It felt like we were the only ones out that evening. Though seeing the occasional boat drift by can be reassuring, there's something about an open waterway that adds to the sense of freedom, especially when you're in a boat you trust.

The more time you spend at sea, the more you begin to notice the details. Subtle vibrations from the engine carried through the throttle and deck can say a great deal about a boat's construction. Over time, they shape the riding experience, sometimes adding to discomfort on longer trips. That's why I appreciate the attention Nordkapp's engineers put into reducing them. It's the kind of detail you might not notice at first, but once you do, it's hard to overlook.

A few nautical miles later, we decided that our destination had been reached. With no plans to stay long and a calm sea, we turned off the engine and let the boat drift. We enjoyed the views from the Coupe's stable hull and let the silence settle in. After cruising at high speed, the sea always feels unnaturally quiet—like the silence is heavier somehow. We relaxed into the cushions of the aft lounge, savouring that feeling of calm.

On our way back to port, Teodor captured some action shots of the engine. We had Active Trim enabled for this ride, which helps optimise performance and reduce fuel costs.

However, I must admit that I sometimes prefer trimming manually. It's a small thing, but it makes me feel more connected to the boat, like driving a stick shift on a car. You quickly learn to read the engine's efficiency from the feel and the wake. It's always satisfying when you get it just right.

But having the trim handled automatically lets me focus on other aspects I love about boating. And sometimes, having one less thing to think about is a relief, freeing up mental space for everything waiting back at shore.

As we returned to the marina, that familiar feeling crept in—the ride was over too soon. Still, even a short outing aboard a quiet, steady wheelhouse boat like the Coupe 830 has the power to reset the day. As I stepped onto the dock, I felt clear-headed and ready to shift gears—home was calling.
